Il envoya un émissaire qui tomba malade à la cour de Cobourg et rencontra la jeune Juliane. Celle-ci épousa le prince mais n’eut pas une vie maritale enviable.

Mais elle permit à son petit frère Léopold de faire carrière dans l’armée russe contre Napoléon. A 5 ans, le jeune Léopold est nommé colonel du régiment impérial Izmailovski en Russie, et à 12 ans, il devient général.

La seconde femme fut Charlotte de Hanovre, princesse de Galles. La petite-fille de Georges III est l’unique fille du Régent et promise à la couronne. Elle épouse Léopold en 1816.

Elle meurt en donnant naissance à un enfant mort-né. Léopold ne sera jamais prince consort de Grande-Bretagne. La troisième femme: Louise d’Orléans. Léopold vit son veuvage en Angleterre. En 1830, on lui propose le trône de Grèce qu’il refuse. En 1831, il devient roi des Belges mais doit faire face à l’opposition des Pays-Bas. Son alliance avec la France qui soutient son trône se concrétise par son union avec une fille du roi des Français, Louise.

Devenu roi, il prend en main le destin de sa dynastie par le biais de ses neveux et nièces :

en 1846 Léopold, son neveu, frère d’Auguste et de Ferdinand, manque d’épouser la reine Isabelle II d’Espagne ;
en 1853 et 1857 ses enfants Léopold et Charlotte s’allient à la plus prestigieuse des Maisons, les Habsbourg-Lorraine, anciens souverains de la Belgique et du Saint-Empire.

La Reine Victoria sera le pendant protestant de la politique matrimoniale du catholique roi des Belges. Grâce à Léopold, les Saxe-Cobourg-Gotha s’assirent sur les trônes de Grande-Bretagne, Belgique, Portugal, Bulgarie. Soit 2 trônes catholiques, 1 anglican et un orthodoxe !!

Le dernier roi de Yougoslavie de 1934 à 1945 est mort en Californie en 1970. Après la période communiste puis la guerre dans les Balkans, le roi a enfin pu regagner sa terre natale.

Son grand-père Pierre I a épousé une princesse du Monténégro. Son père qui mourut assassiné à Marseille a épousé une princesse roumaine, arrière-petite-fille de la Reine Victoria.

Le prince a lui continué les mariages entre les récentes familles royales des pays issus du recul de l’empire ottoman en épousant une princesse grecque, qui était aussi une descendante de la Reine Victoria.

Leur unique fils, Alexandre fit un choix différent d’alliance. Une princesse catholique cousine germaine de l’actuel comte de Paris, du duc de Bragance, du duc de Calabre et du roi d’Espagne : Maria da Gloria Henriqueta Dolores Lucia Micaela Rafaela Gabriela Gonzaga d’Orléans e Bragança.

Ils eurent 3 fils : l’aîné Pierre en 1980 puis des jumeaux : Philippe et Alexandre.
