De plus ce mariage permit au prince de ne pas choquer les princes allemands, férus d’égalité de naissance, quand il devint duc de Saxe-Cobourg-Gotha suite à la mort de son oncle et à la renonciation de son frère aîné le prince de Galles. Les enfants du couple se marièrent selon la coutume germanique avec des princes de haut rang : roi de Roumanie, grands-ducs de Hesse et de Russie, infant d’Espagne et prince de Hohenlohe-Langenbourg.
